The Palaniswami-led AIADMK suffered as a result of a split in the party once fissures developed with Jayalalithaa's close aide, VK Sasikala's nephew TTV Dhinakaran. Dhinakaran who formed his own party, the AMMK enjoys the favour of a loyal voter base among the Thevar community which has been one of the traditional votebanks of the AIADMK.
