When the LDF regained Kerala in 2016, it netted eight of the nine assembly seats in this district, leaving only Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala’s Haripad to the UDF. When the UDF hit back in 2019 by winning 19 of the 20 Lok Sabha seats in the state, Alappuzha alone stood by the LDF. Within months, the Congress wrested the Aroor assembly segment in a by-poll.
